There’s a revolution happening in how people deploy and engage with AI. Not in data centres or cloud platforms, not even via iOS and android apps, but it’s happening in spare bedrooms and home offices. Enthusiasts have bought Mac Minis in their droves, are flashing Raspberry Pis, and are spinning up local servers and connecting them to their lives via Tailscale and SSH tunnels!

The underlying pattern is clear here… people now want AI agents that run for them, not for a platform.

But at the moment this is mostly a prosumer / developer pattern, and not a consumer one, which got me thinking about what happens next in the consumer context as all of this behaviour and growth trickles down to the mass-market.

The next generation of mass-market hardware likely isn’t going to ship with 64GB of RAM (not cheap) so that Debbie and Dave can run a 70B parameter model locally in their house. Most people don’t want to manage their own inference compute. Consumers want stuff to just work, and they’re happy for the thinking to happen somewhere else, as long as their stuff stays private and the experience is integrated into their lives and existing ecosystems.

This is where Apple’s apparently low AI capital expenditure starts looking less like a weakness and more like a strategy. While Google, Microsoft, and Meta pour billions into training foundation models and building inference infrastructure, Apple is watching. And if you know Apple, you know what comes next.

After all Apple didn’t invent the MP3. They built the iPod.

The device nobody’s talking about

Think about what a consumer AI agent actually needs at the edge:

  • A trust and permissions layer; which agents can access what data, which services they can call, what actions they’re allowed to take
  • A context layer; your calendar, your files, your home state, your preferences, held locally or in your existing consumer cloud store and filtered before anything hits an external API
  • An orchestration layer; something for routing tasks to the right model or service without the user needing to know or care where inference happens
  • A security boundary; personal data never leaves raw, egress and ingress to the home or device is scoped and before reaching any external compute

None of this requires a beefy GPU. It requires good networking, maybe a Secure Enclave, attestation, and enough local compute for things like orchestration and privacy filtering. Apple Silicon is already perfect for this.

So in my opinion Apple’s next device probably looks less like a traditional computer and more like a evolution / mashup of the HomePod and a PCa that can broker agent access. Small form factor, low power draw, always on, with networking and security built in at the hardware level. Not so much an AI computer… maybe an AI router.

The iMessage play

Now consider the interface. Right now, the enthusiast community is converging on messaging platforms as the primary way to interact with AI agents. Telegram bots, WhatsApp bridges, Discord integrations… people are finding that chat is the most natural way to talk to an agent. You text it like you’d text a person.

Apple already owns the most sticky messaging platform in the western world. iMessage isn’t just a chat app; it’s deeply integrated into the operating system, has identity baked in via Apple ID, supports rich interactions, and already has an extension framework. It’s the obvious interface for a home AI agent.

Imagine texting your home agent to reschedule your afternoon, check whether the heating’s been left on, or research something and have a summary waiting when you get home. No new app, no new paradigm. Just messaging.

The competition

Apple isn’t the only one seeing this. NVIDIA just announced NemoClaw, pushing agent infrastructure toward the edge. They want to be the compute and governance layer that powers these devices safely, regardless of who builds the shell around them. It’s a smart play.

And then there’s Google. Honestly, Google might have the most complete end-to-end story here. They have the models (Gemini), the hardware (Pixel, Nest), the OS (Android), the messaging (RCS/Google Messages), the home ecosystem (Google Home), and the identity layer (Google accounts). On paper, they could build something even more vertically integrated than Apple. The challenge is their business model. When your revenue comes from advertising, the “your data stays private” story is harder to tell convincingly… even if the technology supports it.

Microsoft has the enterprise play locked down but no meaningful consumer hardware or messaging platform. Meta has WhatsApp and the hardware ambitions, but the trust deficit is real.

The walled garden advantage

So why Apple? Because for once, their closed ecosystem is an unambiguous advantage. They control the hardware, the messaging layer, the identity system, the permissions framework, and the home device ecosystem end to end. And critically, their business model aligns with privacy. They sell hardware, not attention.

Apple can ship a device where the privacy isn’t a feature… it’s the product. Where your agent works for you, brokered through hardware you own, communicating via a channel you already use, with permissions you control.

The family opportunity

There’s another dimension here that almost nobody in the AI space is thinking about… families.

AI agents in the home won’t just serve one person. They’ll need to handle a household; different people, different permissions, different levels of access.

Your teenager doesn’t get the same agent capabilities as you. Your kids’ interactions get filtered differently. A shared family agent needs to know who’s asking before it acts. And when your parents visit and ask the home agent something, it shouldn’t have access to your calendar or finances.

If anyone is going to think about the familial and household evolution of personal AI, it’s Apple. They already have the building blocks; Family Sharing, child accounts, age-gated permissions, Screen Time controls. They’ve spent years thinking about how a single ecosystem serves a household with different trust levels. Translating that into AI agent permissions is a natural extension of what they already do.

This is something the open-source community and enterprise AI players aren’t even considering yet. They’re building for individual power users. Apple builds for families.

The pattern repeats

Apple has always followed the same playbook. Watch enthusiasts and developers duct-tape solutions together. Identify the underlying need. Ship a polished, integrated consumer version that just works.

Right now, people are buying Mac Minis to run local AI, configuring Tailscale to access agents remotely, and using Telegram bots as the interface. Apple is watching all of this. And somewhere in Cupertino, there’s a small, elegant, always-on device being prototyped that bundles just enough compute, smart networking and secure home I/O, identity, and permissions into something your parents could set up.
